What is literacy?
Literacy refers to the teaching of reading and writing to individuals who are illiterate. Today, according to an Ipsos survey conducted for Projet Voltaire, companies are placing increasing importance on spelling and the quality of their employees' oral communication. Mastery of the French language is even considered the most important factor for some recruiters.
However, certain industries still face challenges with illiteracy, particularly in the cleaning sector, where a thorough command of the French language is not always required to perform most tasks.
The impact of literacy in the cleaning sector
Illiteracy can have a real impact. Beyond the discomfort it may cause those affected, it can reflect poorly on the company and harm team productivity and efficiency.
Aware of these challenges, La Providence aims to support its employees in their pursuit of learning, providing them with an advantage that will benefit both their future professional and personal lives.
Solutions implemented by La Providence
To assist and improve the work life of its employees, La Providence has implemented several protocols.
Protocols in place
In the cleaning industry, a color-coding system is crucial, as mentioned in a previous article on "respecting color codes in the cleaning industry." The color-coding of microfiber cloths is essential to maintaining spaces in perfect cleanliness. It also helps our service agents know which area each microfiber is designated for.
In addition, cleaning products have caps that match the microfiber color and an illustration showing the area to be cleaned, which is a significant aid for our staff.
Safety talks and prevention briefings are also conducted, featuring illustrations with minimal text to ensure our employees fully understand the concepts.
La Providence regularly creates explanatory videos, which are presented on tablets by branch managers during the training of our agents. The company heavily relies on visual aids in its documents to better assist employees struggling with literacy and offers French language courses at branches for interested teams.
